well-being
A balance of mental, physical, emotional and spiritual health.
The standpoint of the World Health Organisation, as set out in its Constitution (1948) is that:
“Health is a state of complete mental, physical and social wellbeing and not merely the absence of disease or infirmity”.
Brief definitions of these areas include:
- Mental - the amount of stimulation, the variety of interests and challenges, the ability to make decisions and capacity for coping, keeping yourself motivated.
- Physical - current energy levels, eating and exercise habits, illnesses and relaxation time, general health and looking after yourself.
- Emotional - level of humour and enjoyment, sense of security and trust, sense of feeling valued and positive outlook on life, controlling or expressing your emotions.
- Spiritual -awareness of things that matter, feeling of congruence about life, a sense of purpose and of “who I am, understanding of values and goals.
